SCHMÄL CARTCUT® Cartilage Cutters for Carving Costal Cartilage in Rhinoplasty
In rhinoplasty, the reconstruction of the cartilaginous nasal septum is very important from a functional and aesthetic point of view.
The previously used technique of implanting foreign material such as ivory or silicone did not prove itself because of incompatibility and resulting implant rejection.
The use of autogenous costal cartilage is associated with the lowest risk of rejection and infection in these surgeries. Costal cartilage is preoperatively harvested from the patient, and the surgeon then carves or shapes it for implantation in the nasal region at the operating table. Since the risk of postoperative cartilage deformation can only be minimized if the core of the cartilage is used, the previously harvested cartilage must be extensively carved intraoperatively. To date, this procedure is performed using a scalpel, a time-intensive process taking 20-30 minutes. In addition, the surgeon is at high risk of injuries as there are no safety measures.
